Jayne: I am on the ladder of success

She is humble and looks simple, yet she is one of the emerging stars of lawn tennis in Malawi.

At 20, the Blantyre-based Jayne Chapomba has just returned from Russia where she represented Malawi at this year’s Federation for International Summer Universidade (Fisu) world University games.

Although she failed to bring any medal at Fusu, Jayne qualified for the tournament after being among successful players during the Cucsa games held in Namibia last year.

Jayne won a bronze medal at the finals. But this is not the only medal on her shelf. Jayne who idolises Serena Williams has won lots of awards in sports, but she values most international medals she won in the Association of National Olympics Committees of Africa (Anoca), Zone VI, Fisu and the International Tennis Federation (ITF) tournaments.

“I am on a ladder. I started the sport in 2000 and through hard work, I have achieved a lot. I have participated in several tournaments and won medals. I am happy I represented Malawi at Fisu. There is still more from me,” said Jayne who hailed the support she gets from the Polytechnic where she is studying marketing with the Polytechnic’s Development Centre.

She says her secret rests in a hardworking spirit and her belief in God.
